Happy Fall Break!
I hope you are all able to enjoy the time off from school. If you are looking for something to keep your kids busy, I have a list of things that they could practice.
- I updated their spelling lists for next week. Since school starts on Tuesday, they will lose a day to practice so it might not be a bad thing to have them look at their words on the spelling tab of my website or practice them online at SpellingCity.
-Our October Lexia Challenge is underway, several students have already leveled up, encourage your child to complete a few units over the break.
-You all heard Ms. Dong ask students to complete more reading practice on Mandarin Matrix, surprise her with a couple books.
-Do you have a good book to read at home? Pick it up and read a few chapters then tell an adult about what you read.
-Play a family game... do you have Jenga and some addition or subtraction flashcards? Do every block someone pulls out they have to answer a math fact...add a twist, the person that tips the tower has to answer 5 facts.
If you are interested in ordering books from Scholastic because you missed the school Book Fair, feel free to place an order and I will submit it for you.
9/30/19
Don't forget to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences. Ms. Dong and I will be available on October 9th (8am-7:30pm), October 10th (4:15pm-7:30pm), and October 15th (8am-3:30pm). Please make sure to reserve your time, we have limited spaces. We look forward to meeting with you and discussing how great your child is.

Another great week down! We are really getting into our routines and learning. This week we focused on what fluent reading looks like. We talked about expression, rate, smoothness, accuracy and more. We also worked on identifying place value, worked with expanded and standard form, and began learning about rounding.
We took our first math test. It was sent home today. I am asking that any student that did not receive and 80% or higher rework their incorrect answers, have a parent sign it and return it by next Friday. I have also stapled a few extra practice pages he/she can complete with your help to review the concepts. Please take some time over the next few days to help your child master these skills. I am attaching a key to the test with some notes on it so you are aware of what we did.
A new homework calendar is being sent home today. Please put it in a safe place for the month of September and read the directions on the top of it. I have told students NOT to start the Lexia section of their homework yet because we are in the process of updating their accounts. I do expect them to read and practice their math facts. If any of you would like some flashcards or +/- worksheets please let me know, I'd be happy to send some home.
Scholastic book orders will be placed on Thursday. If you would like to purchase books for your home use please do so soon. You can find the link and the class code on my website under the links section https://guerrero1234.weebly.com/.
I would love for students to read at least 5-10 of their nightly reading out loud. That way they can check their fluency and self -correct as necessary. I gave them the idea of recording themselves reading part of a book and then listening to it so they could hear how they sound. It might be a fun way to get them reading. I recently did this with my own daughter and we had a lot of fun making the movie. If your child does this and would like to share it with me, I'd love to watch it and give them some feedback/praise!
Almost done...
Our students did AMAZING on their performance for the PTA on Monday. I sent you the video in your email. Please keep it for personal viewing and not public posting.

My name is Colleen Guerrero. This is my 14th year teaching and 4th year working with Immersion students. I grew up in Southern California where I got my B.A. (UC-Riverside) then I moved to Utah 11 years ago. I now have a Master of Ed. from SUU and have recently completed my Educational Technology Endorsement so I hope to integrate technology in the classroom more this year (and not just for busy work) J . I live locally in Eagle Mountain with my husband and two kids. My husband had a career change this year and has now joined me in the teaching field but at the high school level. My kids are in the Chinese Immersion program here at Black Ridge in 2nd and 4th grades. I like to think I know how this runs from the parent and the teacher sides of things. So, if you have any questions please ask…if I don’t know the answers, I will find out. I love running into families around town. You can often find me walking around neighborhoods, driving around the new Overland subdivision watching my house be built, shopping at Smiths, Target, Costco, and taking my kids from Piano lessons to Softball games and such. I am excited to work with your child this year and help them learn!
